Mrs. Oscar Awald (Ethel Gertrude Marfilius) Carlson

Ethel Gertrude Carlson, 70, died May 12, 1986 at Community Memorial Hospital, Postville, following a long illness.

Services were May 14, 1986 at Garden City United Methodist Church (white church), Monona, conducted by Rev. Marion Bloodworth. Pallbearers were Lowell Carlson, Ronald Marfilius, Garon Reinke, Calvin Foels, Robert Reinke and Dean Foels. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery and Schultz's Funeral Home was in charge of the services.

Ethel Gertrude Carlson was born Feb. 8, 1916, near Farmersburg, the daughter of William and Esther Debes Marfilius. She was baptized April 23, 1916 by Rev. Glaeser at Pilgrim Evangelical Church. She was confirmed Oct. 5, 1930 by Rev. Berg and became a member of Salem "Prairie" Evangelical Church. She transferred her membership to the Pilgrim Evangelical Church at the time the Salem Evangelical Church was sold. At the time of her death she was a member of Garden City United Methodist Church.

She graduated from Farmersburg High School May 17, 1933 in a class of 11. Feb. 12, 1936 she married Oscar Awald Carlson at her home with Rev. Zellar officiating. They had 2 children, Dwayne and Darlene.

The couple farmed near Farmersburg all their married life.

In addition to enjoying her family, she liked to travel and had been in each of the 50 states. She was active in organizations including United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Harriet, in 1972.

Survivors include her husband, Oscar; her son, Dwayne of St. Olaf, her daughter, Darlene (Mrs. Edward Sass) of Monona, 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Irene Reinke of Monona, and a brother, Dayton Marfilius of Monona.
