Funeral services for Velva Rose Stafford were held Tuesday, August 8, 1989, 1:30 p.m. at Garden City United Methodist Church, Monona. Rev. Gary Dobbins officiated. Burial was in Smithfield Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home, Monona, was in charge of services.
Velva Stafford, daughter of Charles Alexander and Alvina (Johnson) Rose, was born June 14, 1894 in Volney, Iowa. She was educated in the rural schools and attended the Waukon Business College.
On April 29, 1914 she married Ernest Hampton Stafford at Monona. They farmed in the Volney vicinity for many years. They had 4 daughters. In the 1930's the family lived in Postville and in 1937 moved to Waukon. In 1941 they moved to Burlington and lived there until 1964 when they retired and lived in Monona. The last few years Velva lived with her daughter in Waukon.
She died at the Good Samaritan Home in Waukon Saturday, August 5, 1989. She was a member of Garden City United Methodist Church, Monona.
Preceding her in death were her husband who died July 19, 1985; 2 daughters, Vernie Ruth and Geraldine Laurayne; 4 brothers, Clarence, Dell, George and Gilbert; and 2 sisters, Blanche Thomas and Leta Evans Liddle.
Surviving are her daughters, Leone (Robert) Hegeman, Waukon and Dorothy (Ben) Dorkins, Springfield, IL, 4 grandchildren, Louis Hegeman, Miriam Esmail, Glenn Dorkins, Paul Dorkins and 6 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Louis Hageman, Patrick Hegeman, Richard Esmail, Paul Dorkins, Glenn Dorkins and Evan Dorkins.
