------------------------------------------------Three Monona Teens Killed By Train Friday Night Enroute To Dance At Postville School
The dense fog Friday night helped cause the accident that killed 3 Monona teens who were on their way to a dance at Postville High School. The accident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. when their car struck the 68th car of a 91 car freight train.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Derek Steva, 17, the driver and Jamie Brainard, 16, and Krista Kifer, 15, were about 2 miles northeast of Postville on Hardin Drive (an Allamakee County gravel road that runs past the Good Samaritan Center) when they crashed into the eastbound Soo Line train. The authorities speculated that the teens, all students at MFL-MarMac High School, probably never saw the train.
The car exploded into flames upon impact and the occupants were killed instantly. There was no evidence as to the speed of the car but it was estimated that the train was traveling about 25 miles per hour.
A spokesman said that because the impact occurred so far back in the train, it was not detected until the train reached Marquette some 18 miles later.
This tragedy was the 3rd fatal accident in 2 years at the same location. Along with the fog, this crossing is also obscured by a hill for oncoming westbound traffic. There are crossing arms at the location, but no lights.
Allamakee County Supervisors along with residents of the area, have worked for years to improve the safety of the crossing. They will continue their battle to protect motorists from this blind crossing.
