MATTIE LIVINGOOD

Elkader Register, September, 1956

Funeral services for Mattie Livingood were held at the Witt funeral chapel, with the Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating, Monday, Sept. 17, at 2:00 p.m. The Gill funeral service and Wm. J. Witt & Sons were in charge of arrangements. Concluding services were in the East Side cemetery.

Miss Livingood died on the morning of Sept. 14 after an illness of several months. She is survived by her brother, D. E. Livingood, and was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Anna, who died in 1929.

Mattie Livingood, born Aug. 17, 1868, second daughter of David and Mary Livingood, was reared and educated in Elkader.

She and six boys were graduated from the Elkader high school in the class of 1887. After teaching two years, she attended Iowa State Teachers college, after which she taught several years in Guttenberg, Strawberry Point, Garnavillo, Carroll, and Cresco. She served in Sioux City for five years as principal in the public schools. Many of her vacations were spent in various colleges, training for further advancement in her teaching career. Listed as a special teacher for many years in Sioux City, because of her ability to understand and read the mentality of the problem pupils, she was termed the "boys' teacher" as a result of her abilaity to cope with their natures. She spent thirty-five years as an educator.

During her late father's illness Miss Livingood took a leave of absence for three years to care for him. Following his death she resigned to continue her home with her brother in Elkader.

Since youth she had been affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church. As a high school girl she taught in the Sabbath school for three years.
