A funeral mass for Bertie Waters was held Thursday, March 23, 2000 at 10 a.m. in St. Bridget Catholic Church at Postville, Iowa. Father Paul Ouderkirk was the Presider. Other participants were David Koopman, Lector, Steve Waters, Song Leader, Stan Straate, Prayers of the Faithful, Eucharist Minister, Edna Lechtenberg, Mass Servers, Shauna Lechtenberg, Anne Straate, and Brittany Heins, and Kelly (Waters) Cain was the Pianist. A Rosary Service was held Wednesday, March 22, 2000 at 7 p.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Casket bearers were Stephen Waters, Vincent Waters, Robert Waters, Charles Corcoran, Jason Waters, and Ian Waters. Robert James "Bertie" Waters, the son of Robert Burton Waters and Mary Ann McKinley, was born December 23, 1912, on the family farm in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, south of Postville, Iowa. He passed away Monday, March 20, 2000 in Veterans Memorial Hospital at Waukon, Iowa. He had reached the age of 87 years, two months, and 27 days. He attended the Grand Meadow Township School No. 6.On October 31, 1939 he was married to Mabel Florence Ewing in St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville. To this union six children were born. They farmed on the Waters family farm until 1965 when they moved to Postville. Bertie was employed at the Postville Feed Mill from 1966 until 1980. Bertie enjoyed farming and exchanging work with his neighbors, until he was forced to retire because of ill health. He later regained some of his working ability and found a job related to the farming that he loved so much; working at a local feed mill. Bertie enjoyed the time he spent playing cards and visiting with his friends. He also took up bowling and pool. He is preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, Bernard, Louis, Leonard, Ambrose, Clement, and Paul, and two sisters, Helen Kneeland and Marie Leui. Surviving are his wife, Mabel, six children, Stephen and wife, Barb, of Knoxville, IA, Vincent of Ashville, NC, Mary Ann and husband, Charles Corcoran, of Ft. Dodge, IA, Margaret and husband, Brian Bengtson, of Kissimmee, FL, Regina Waters of Postville, IA, Robert Waters of Racine, WI, a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Waters of Postville and a sister-in-law, Hazel Waters of Postville. Also, 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, (Steve and Barb Waters): Kelly (Waters) Cain and husband, Paul and their children, Molly, Daniel, and Erin; Kris (Waters) Alfstad and husband, David and daughter, Cassie Jo; (Mary Ann and Charles Corcoran); Carolyn (Corcoran) Goodwin and husband, Daniel, and their children, Charlie and Lauren, David Corcoran and son, Lane; (Robert Waters); son, Tyler; (Regina Waters), sons, Ian and Asa; (Margaret and Brian Bengtson); Heather Bengtson and daughters, Lindsay and Megan Ramirez; Kevin Bengtson, Ken Bengtson and wife, Debi, and daughter Joy; (Vincent and Cheryl Waters); Joni (Waters) Spencer and husband, Marvin, and daughters Jaclyn and Jadyn, Wendy Waters, Jason Waters and wife, Treva and daughter, Hannah. Bertie was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville, the Knights of Columbus and the Farm Bureau.
