Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 13 Aug. 1897.

The oldest resident of Garnavillo passed from death unto life early Saturday morning, at the advanced age of 93 years. William* Henry Shierholz has gone to receive the reward which is give for a live well spent.

Mr. Shierholz was born on Oct. 25, 180_ (looks like 1803 or 1805), in Oldenburg, Wilderhausen, Germany. He immigrated to America in 1832 and settled in Ohio. He was followed a short time after by his parents and the remainder of the family. In 183_(looks like 1836 or 1838) he was married to Adelheid Tangeman, at New Bremen, O., from which union have sprung twelve children, ten of whom are still alive, viz., five sons and five daughters. In 1847 he removed from Ohio to his farm in Read township, and lived from then until his death - a period of over fifty years - in Clayton county. Since 1888 he has resided in Garnavillo at the home of his son William, where he died. His wife preceded him in death in 1891, and the sorrow of parting with his loved ones on earth is lightened by the joy of meeting with the loved one above. May he rest in peace.

Notes: Correct name is Herman Henry, not William. Burial is in the old Garnavillo cemetery. Although his wife has a large gravemarker, none exists for H.H. Schierholz.
