John Schnieder Died 21 Feb 1913
Guttenberg Press, 21 Feb 1913 Page 5Sad death of John Schnieder
John Schnieder was crushed to death in the Guttenberg Excelsior factory at 10:15 o’clock this (Friday) morning. He had adjusted a belt that had run off the pulleys to the feeder of the baling press and then while reaching down to put the end board in place, his head was struck by the descending fork of the feeder and his body was caught and forced into the press by the rapid action of the plunger. Adrian Carnes, the operator, who was busy on the opposite side of the press, noticed a disturbed regularity and immediately signaled to stop the engine. Gruesome to view was the blood stain and the lifeless mangled body of the unfortunate young man. The head held only by the spinal column, was badly crushed, the ribs were crushed and the bones of the arms and legs broken. For the past five years he has been a willing and diligent handy man on whom his employers could always depend. The parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schnieder, feel deeply grieved over the loss of their oldest and faithful son, aged twenty years, and neighbors and friends sympathise with the family. None of the men in the factory witnessed the fatal accident.

John Schneider, aged 20 years, met death in an awful manner in the Guttenberg Excelsior factory last Friday forenoon. While putting the end board in the baling press the fedder fork caught him and forced him into the bailer, mangling him fearfully and killing him quickly. When found he was a most gruesome sight. The head held only the spinal column, was badly crushed, as were also the ribs and the bones of the arms and legs broken.
