A Requiem Mass was said Friday, August 30, at 9:00 a.m. at Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, ENT Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colorado, for WO 1st Class Charles D. Sonnkalb, Jr., 21, who was killed in action in Vietnam. Burial was at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colorado.
He was a son of Col. and Mrs. Charles D. Sonnkalb, 2313 Clarkson Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado. The elder Sonnkalb is chief of personnel for the Air Defense Command based at Colorado Springs.
The soldier formerly piloted helicopter gunships in Vietnam, but recently had switched to a scouting helicopter. His ship was shot down on a mission near the demilitarized zone, and he died of the wounds.
A member of the 1st Air Cavalry Division, he had been in the Army since March 1967 and in Vietnam since last April.
His father, a 29-year Air Force veteran, administered the Army oath to him while the family was in Manila, Philippines, where Col. Sonnkalb then was stationed.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include two brothers, Scott, 19, and Steve, 17, both at home and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul L. Sonnkalb and Mrs. Anna Beucher.
