BERNHARDT ACKMAN WAS OLDEST MALE EDGEWOOD RESIDENT
Bernhardt Herman Ackman, oldest male resident of Edgewood, was born November 8, 1851 in the province of Hanover in Germany. He was the son of Herman Henry and Aselaide Ackman and one of a family of 11 children. He was reared in Germany and received his education and early training in that country.

About the year 1880 he crossed the Atlantic to make his home in the United States. On December 2, 1880 he was united in marriage with Anna Wilhelmina Muehlenkamp. Their home was established in New York City and it was while still living there that their first son, Fred was born and died in infancy.

Mr. and Mrs. Ackman lived for a short while at Mayfield, Ky., then moved to Delaware county where they farmed. Still later they purchased a farm northeast of Edgewood about seven miles and lived in that community, established themselves as prosperous farmers and drew around them a circle of cherished friends. In 1920 the couple moved to Edgewood where their circle of friends grew to include everyone who came to know them.

In 1935 Mrs. Ackman passed to her eternal reward after almost 55 years of happy married life. Since that time the home has been kept by the daughter, Laura, Mrs. W. T. Funk who gave the beloved parent the finest of care. Mr. Ackman had been ill since last June and had been confined to his bed most of the time. The devoted and tender care given him stands as a real tribute of praise to Mrs. Funk.

Mr. Ackman passed on to be reunited with loved ones gone before on Tuesday evening, October 21, at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 13 days.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. The service was in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Thos. Smith. The two beautiful hymns, "Face to Face" and "In the Morning" were sung by Eldon Stafford of Strawberry Point with Mrs. Jennie Forward, accompanist. Casket bearers were Burdette Ackman of Arlington, Carl and Keith Ackman of Strawberry Point, Ralph Cole of Fayette, Clark Shaffer of Colesburg and Clark Hyde of Garnavillo. burial was made in the Ebenezer Cemetery.

Mr. Ackman was a staunch member of the Methodist Church. To him religion was a living and vital thing. During his long and useful life in the church he had filled the offices of steward, trustee, class leader and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member of Mr. Joe Forward's Men's Bible Class in Sunday School and contributed much to the interest of that class.
