Elizabeth Leui Sonnkalb (1869-1952)

Rites Held Today At St. Bridge's for Mrs. Sonnkalb

Funeral services were held this morning, Wednesday, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church with Rev. F. J. Vallaster as celebrant of the mass for Mrs. Elizabeth C. Sonnkalb who passed away at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Gallagher at Parker, South Dakota on Saturday, June 7, 1952. Burial was made in the family lot in Grand Meadow cemetery near her old home.

The deceased was born on March 14, 1860, as the daughter of Jacob and Anna Heirigs Leui, in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county. She received her early education in the nearby district school and in the Postville high school. She also attended Iowa State Normal school at Cedar Falls, where she prepared herself for her teaching profession.

On September 7, 1892 she was united in marriage to Charles F. W. Sonnkalb. To this union five children were born: Nellie, Mrs. J. R. Gallagher of Parker, South Dakota, Paul L., of Postville, Elizabeth, Mrs. Bennett Buren of Leland, and two sons who died in infancy, Robert and Charles.

After the death of her husband in 1911, she continued living in Postville until 1928. For a number of years she was housekeeper for Rev. J. J. Clune and after his death made her home with her sister, Miss Anna Leui of Postville and her two daughters. She had been in failing health for several years and her death is attributed to old age.

She is survived by her twin sister, Miss Anna H. Leui, her three children, Nellie, Paul, and Elizabeth, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
