Rattlesnake Bite Fatal
Last Saturday afternoon Mrs. William Kraus, who lived about four miles south of Garnavillo, went out to carry lunch to the men working in the field. While the men were eating she went a little ways from where they were to a spring after a jug of water, near which place she was bitten on the foot by a rattlesnake. Medical assistance was summoned, but in spits of all that could be done she died yesterday morning.About 9 o'clock the undertaker went down to their home to make preparations for the funeral and on reaching the place found the husband, William Kraus, lying dead in the house. The coroner was notified and a jury called, and ujpon investigation a phia containing a small quantity of strychnine was found. It was learned that he had bid goodbye to his three small children, who were the only persons there at the time, and sent them away from the house.
Consequently, after a careful consideration of all facts surrounding the case, the jury returned a verdict of "suicide." No particular motive for his rash deed is known, except grief for the loss of his wife.
A large family of children are left, three of them being quite small. Mr. Kraus came to this country several years ago from Pfortzheim, Baden, was 60 years old and his wife 58. Their funerals were held today. -- Monona Leader
