I am not related and have no further information, this was taken from an old scrapbook that belonged to Mrs. Clara (Jones) McCartney.

Sudden Heart Attack Fatal to John WathenEdgewood people were greatly shocked last Friday morning to hear of the sudden death of John Wathen, which occured at his home at about 9:00 o'clock. Mr. Wathen was seemingly as well as usual when he was suddenly stricken with a severe heart attack, which proved fatal in about one-half hour after he was first taken ill. Mr. Wathen was a man of kind genial disposition and will be sadly missed by his family, and a large circle of friends.
John W. Wathen, son of John and Mary Carter Wathen, was born Sept. 4, 1877 at Turkey River, Iowa, and died at his home in Edgewood, Dec. 28, 1934, aged 57 years, three months and 24 days.
He grew to manhood in the vicinity of Turkey River and was united in marriage to Cora M. Borrett, Feb. 6, 1901. Three children were born to this union, Clyde L., who preceded his father in death Feb. 18, 1933, Sanford J., who died in infancy, and Fern Louise, a teacher in the West Union school.
He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, daughter, Fern, three grandchildren, Clayton, Jack and Jimmie Wathen, children of his son Clyde. He is also survived by two brothers, Fred and Bert Wathen of Garber and one sister, Mrs. Ella Line of Marshalltown.
Funeral servies were held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the M. E. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. F. O. Winslow. the M. E. male quartet rendered two selections. Interment was made in the Edgewood cemetery.
The following out of town relatives attended the funeral service: Mr. snd Mrs. Bert Wathen, son, Russell, Fred and Louis Wathen, Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Hansel, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Borrett and George Borrett of Garber; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Patrick and daughter, Fern, of Guttenberg, Mr. and Mrs. George Barr of Strawberry Point; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Stevens of Oelwein; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Borrett of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brown of Spencer; and Clayton Wathen of Colesburg.
