MARY ELLEN JONES FUNERAL WEDNESDAY
Mary Ellen Jones was born Aug. 11, 1862, near Plattville, Grant County, Wisconsin. When she was six years old, she came with her parents, Alexander and Ann Jones, crossing the Mississippi River on a ferry at Dubuque. From there they came by team and wagon to the home of her mother's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Cook, who lived one and a half miles west of Strawberry Point. The following spring the family made their home on a farm near Strawberry. From there they moved to a farm four and a half miles from Edgewood. She lived in this vicinity till the fall of 1908 when with her parents she moved to Cedar Rapids. Here they spent many happy years. After the death of her father, she and her mother made their home with their sister and daughter, Mrs. S. W. Halfhill and her husband and family. In May 1916 her aged mother passed away and she went to Strawberry Point to make her home with an aunt, Mrs. Sarah Wilder. In 1929, she came to Edgewood, where her sister, Mrs. Halfhill was living and here she spent the remaining years of her life which came to a close after a brief illness, Sunday at 8:30 p. m. February 19, 1939.Early in life she joined the United Brethren Church of Wood, to which church she remained faithful to her death. She had a cheerful greeting for everyone with whom she came in contact, was always grateful for any courtesy shown her. She unselfishly devoted her life to caring for her parents, bringing them comfort and love in their declining years. Much of her time in her last years was spent in reading and filling scrap books with many interesting items she came across. She was especially fond of poetry. Failing eyesight made it necessary for her to give up this favorite pastime, and as a result she had many lonesome hours in which she looked back over her life and lived again in her mind the many experiences, both happy and sad, which had been her lot.
When stricken suddenly last Wednesday she told those caring for her that she was ready and willing to meet her Creator, sure of his welcome and happy in the anticipation of reaching that brighter shore.
Those left to mourn her passing are four sisters, Mrs. B. W. Peet and Mrs. S. W. Halfhill of Edgewood, Mrs. C. R. Smith of Arlington and Mrs. W. H. McCartney of Gilman, Wis.; one brother, David M. Jones of Brandywine, Maryland, and a score of nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Congregational Church in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Austin Eberle. Music for the service was sung by Mr. C. J. Rulon and Mrs. E. H. Witt with Miss Margaret Kirk as accompanist. Casket attendants were the six nephews, Forest Powell of Arlington, Ray McCune of Cedar Rapids, Charles and Frank Peet, V. C. Halfhill and W. A. Smith. Burial was made in the Edgewood cemetery.
