MRS. JONES DIED IN CEDAR RAPIDS
Was A Former Resident of the Vicinity
Near Wood Where She Spent Most of Her Life.Mrs. Ann Jones passed away at her home in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, May 10th, 1916, at the age of 79 years, 6 months and 4 days. The deceased had been in poor health for some time past, which was due mainly to old age.
Miss Ann Cook was born at Long Hollow, near Elizabeth, Jo Davis County, Illinois, December 9th, 1836, and was married to Alexander Jones, August 14th, 1856, in Galena, Illinois, who preceded her in death four years ago. To this union were born six children; Mrs. Martha A. Peet of Edgewood, Iowa; Miss Mary E. Jones of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; David M. Jones of Cedarville, Maryland; Mrs. Sarah E. Smith of Edgewood; Mrs. Emma J. Halfhill of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Clara McCartney of Elkport, Iowa.
The deceased in company with her husband, came to Iowa in 1863, settling in Clayton County which county had been their home until about six years ago when they moved to Cedar Rapids. Most of Mrs. Jones, life had been spent in the neighborhood surrounding Wood, east of this place, where she was highly respected by all acquaintances. She was converted in early youth, joining the Methodist church and lived a true christian life to the end. Her influence as a christian woman in the neighborhood was always for the best and her work in that line will long be remembered and cherished by her six children and twenty-three grandchildren who are left to mourn her death.She also leaves, besides the children mentioned above, five sisters; Mrs. J. A. Wilder and Mrs Elizabeth Blake of Strawberry Point, Iowa; Mrs. J. M. Jennings of Volga City, Iowa; Mrs. Atchison of Elgin, Illinois, and Mrs. Smith of Logan, Kansas. One other sister, Mrs. Mary Breed, having passed away two years ago last March, and one brother who died in 1876. All seven sisters celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary and five of them lived to celebrate their golden anniversary.
The remains were brought to Edgewood for burial Saturday morning, the services being held in the Congregational church, Rev. C. H. True preaching the funeral sermon. Music was furnished by the Wood quartet, the boys having known the deceased practically all their lives. Interment was made by the side of her husband in Edgewood cemetery.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral were as follows: Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Halfhill and two sons, Vernon and Sylvan; Miss Mary Jones, Miss Marie Loop and Mr. and Mrs. Ora Halfhill of Cedar Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Wilder and Mrs. Elizabeth Blake of Strawberry Point; Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Jennings of Volga; and Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Phelps of Britt, Iowa, the latter beinf a niece of the deceased.
The journal and all other friends deeply sympathize with the bereaved family in their sorrow.
Mother thou hast gone before us,And they smiling face we miss,
But thy spirit hovers over us,Beckoning us to realms of bliss.
Thou art gone who was so cherished,Whom we oft in friendship met;
But thy memory has not perishedAnd our hearts cannot forget.
But we will not mourn despairing,Her's the joy that Angels love,
May we for that world preparing,Meet thee in those realms above.
