Harriet Carter

Funeral services for Mrs. Harriet Carter were held Saturday, November 2, 1996, at 10:30 a.m. at Schutte's Clermont Funeral Chapel in Clermont. The Reverend John Massey of the Lake Lutheran Church in Renwick, Iowa, officiated. The organist was Mrs. Loretta Amundson. Burial was in the Marion Lutheran Cemetery at Gunder. The Schutte Funeral Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements.

Harriet Louella Ulstad Carter, daughter of Henry and Josie (Nelson) Erickson, was born March 8, 1909 at Gunder, Iowa. She died Wednesday, October 30, 1996, in the Rotary Ann Retirement Home at Eagle Grove, Iowa. She had reached the age of 87 years, 7 months and 22 days.

Harriet was baptized and confirmed in the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder. She attended the country school near her home. The school was so near her house that she went home for dinner each day. Two of the boys from the class would be appointed each day to go after a pail of water at her house.

At the age of 14, following the day of her confirmation in 1923, her mother died and Harriet went to work at various places, including the Aase Haugen Nursing Home near Decorah, Iowa.

On February 2, 1928, Harriet was married to Clarence Ulstad in the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder, Iowa. Clarence died January 12, 1951. On August 18, 1951, Harriet and Omar Carter were married by a Lutheran minister at Mount Vernon, Washington. Mr. Carter died on June 7, 1988.

Harriet moved to the state of Washington where she lived for 50 years. She worked for a laundry company in Everett, Washington, as a press operator for 20 years, quitting when she was 62 years old. In 1985, she moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas.

She is preceded in death by her 2 husbands, Clarence Ulstad and Omar Carter; 5 sisters: Nora, Emily, Gertie, Agnes and Nettie and a brother, Peter.

Surviving are a sister, Mabel Larson of Eagle Grove, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews: Harriet Olson, Louie Amundson, Joyce Okey, Palmar Larson, Roger Larson, Nora Martin and Glen Peake and many friends.

She had been a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and became a member of the Lake Lutheran Church in Renwick, Iowa, in 1989.

Casket bearers were: Aines Olson, Alvin Erickson, Oliver Larson, LaVerne Larson, David Larson, Matthew Erickson and Joel Bartz.
