A Celebration of Life Funeral services for Robert H. Schlitter, age 85, of Oelwein, Iowa and formerly of Allison, Iowa were held on Monday, February 20, 2012 at Grace United Methodist Church, Oelwein, Iowa with Pastor Connie Markle officiating. Interment was at the Monona City Cemetery in Monona, Iowa.

Robert H. Schlitter, son of William and Laura (Hensel) Schlitter, was born on October 16, 1926 on the family farm near Monona, Iowa. He received his education at the Figge Country School in Allamakee County, Iowa. Robert was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Swenson on October 1, 1947 at Monona, Iowa. Bob was the L.P. Gas manager for Farm Service for over 20 years until he became disabled as the result of a gas explosion in 1984. After his recovery from the accident, Bob became an avid volunteer in the community. He served as the director of the Food Pantry, served on boards and committees for the Lions Club and the Community Club in Allison, Iowa. Bob was instrumental in building and developing the playgrounds at the school, city swimming pool, and at Wilder's Park. He also drove the ambulance for six years. Bob served on many church boards, as a deacon, trustee, Sunday School teacher, lay leader, and custodian. He was currently a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein, Iowa. Bob was an advocate and mentor for many youth, instilling a positive influence in their lives and career development. He loved nature and animals. Bob especially enjoyed spending time with his friends and his family.

Robert H. Schlitter died Friday, February 17, 2012 at his home in Oelwein, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, six half brothers and sister, Elsie Kutzbach, Frederick Schlitter, Herbert Schlitter, Clarence Schlitter, Floyd Schlitter, and Lester Schlitter; and six brothers and sisters, Verna Chalders, Howard Schlitter, Dayton Schlitter, Florence Plozel, Harvey Schlitter, and Alfred Schlitter.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ruth Ann, three children, Dale (Tammy) Schlitter of Bartlett, Illinois, Janice (Terry) Tilleraas of Dodgeville, Wisconsin, and Dean (Sue) Schlitter of Oelwein, Iowa; 6 grandchildren, Mike Schlitter of Los Angeles, California, Andy (Emily) Tilleraas of San Pierre, Indiana, Jessica (Greg) Phelps of Colchester, Illinois, Laura Kithcart of Davenport, Iowa, Dan Schlitter and Emily Schlitter, both of Bartlett, Illinois; 6 great-grandchildren, Loren, MacKenzie, and Mallory Tilleraas of San Pierre, Indiana, Janie, Billy, and Alaina Phelps of Colchester, Illinois; two sisters, Adeline McFarlane of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin and Alice Palas of Dubuque, Iowa, one sister-in-law, Hazel Schlitter of Waukon, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
