HOWARD H. VOELKER
Howard H. Voelker, 71, was born January 5, 1920, in Farmersburg, IA, the son of Edward and Celinda (Mohrman) Voelker. He died Friday, December 13, 1991, at the Brookings Hospital, Brookings, SD.
He received his early education in Farmersburg, IA graduating from Postville High School in 1939. He attended Iowa State University and graduated with a B. S. Degree. He then attended Kansas State University and received a M. S. Degree, and he received a Ph. D. from Iowa State University. He was employed at the University of Arkansas from 1948 until 1950, as Assistant Professor.
He was married to Marian Saathoff on August 31, 1952, in Gilmore City, IA. He was then employed at South Dakota State University from 1954 until his retirement in 1987, as Professor of the Dairy Science Department.
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Brookings, the American Dairy Science Association, South Dakota Holstein Breeders Association, Farm-House Alumni and the Golden K Kiwanis.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Marian, Brookings, SD; four sons, David L., Stevens Point, WI; Paul A ., Mitchell, SD; Kevin J., East Hartford, CT; and Dan W., Brookings, SD; three grandchildren, Jake, Alan and Megan; three brothers, Milton, Reinbeck, IA; Gerald, Strawberry Point, IA; and Don of Ames, IA; one sister, Marie (Mrs. Elmer) Hendrickson, Oceanside, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 17, 1991, at First Lutheran Church, 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. James E. Thvedt officiating. Organist was David Ellison and soloist was Lyle Stewart. Burial was in First Lutheran Cemetery at Brookings, SD. Pallbearers were Lawrence Embry, Ross Baky,er [newspaper spelling], Roy Wheeler, Kenneth Spurgeon, John Haertel and David Gilkerson.
