Funeral services were held for Irene Cook, 94, Tuesday, June 9, 1992, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. Rev. Lance A. Bentley officiated the service with burial in East Side Cemetery, Elkader. Pallbearers were James Cook, William Wenger, Jed Siebrecht, Karl Casten, Wayne Gilson and Bud Siebrecht.
Irene Cook was born December 30, 1897, in Clayton County, Iowa, the daughter of Jens and Olia (Olson) Jensen. She grew up and was educated in the area, attending rural Clayton County schools. She was baptized and confirmed at Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder. On April 11, 1918, she was united in marriage to Alfred W. Cook at St. Olaf. Four children were born to this union. They farmed in Highland Township from 1920-1949. They moved on an acreage near St. Olaf until 1977 when they moved to Keystone Terrace Apartments, Elkader. Her husband died February 27, 1989. For the past year she has resided in the Elkader Care Center where she died Saturday, June 6, 1992.
Survivors include her son Merton of Elkader; three daughters, Burma Cook of Elkader, Ve Wille of Garnavillo, and Judy Siebrecht of Clermont; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a sister, Velgie Lind of Clinton, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson, David Wille; four sisters; and two brothers.
