Elmer D. "Moe" Johanningmeier, 76, of Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly of 1242 Blackhawk Drive, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at the center.

Because family members are out of the country, arrangements are pending and will be announced at a later date by the Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave.

Elmer D. (Moe) Johanningmeier, 76, of Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center, 2939 Kaufmann Ave., formerly of 1242 Blackhawk Drive, Dubuque, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at the center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N- Grandview Ave., where there will be a prayer service at 4:30 p.m.

Mr. Johanningmeier was a Dubuque City Police Officer, elected Bailiff of Dubuque Municipal Court and appointed Bailiff of Dubuque County District Court for 25 years, retiring in 1988. After his retirement, he did security work at the airport and post office.

He was born on April 17, 1926, in Monona, Iowa, son of Elmer and Eleanor (Casey) Johanningmeier. He married Rose Mescher in 1948, at St. Boniface Church, New Vienna, Iowa.

He proudly served with the Army during World War II as an Army Ranger 5th battalion in Normandy, France, Anzio, Italy, and the Rhineland. His awards included European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbons with Battle Stars, Overseas Service Bars, Army of Occupation Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge.

Moe enjoyed his family, good food and puttering around the house. He loved to pass on old family stories that he enjoyed embellishing and was never at a loss for quips. One he commonly used instead of goodbye was "let us know if you hear anything." He was a fun and loving father and husband.

Surviving are his wife, Rose E. Johanningmeier; two daughters, Mary E. (Merle) Neises, of Galena, Ill., and Karol A. (Tom) Ward, of Hailey, Idaho; a son, Robert A. (Mary Lou) Johanningmeier, of Dubuque; 11 grandchildren, Laura (Jim) Knabel, Amy (Matt) Cooksley, David (Jen) Johanningmeier, Angie Johanningmeier, Rachael Neises, Hailey Neises, Kaitlyn Neises, Ashley Neises, Stephanie Neises, Brian Ward and Hannah Ward; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie (Bob) Richard, of Dubuque; a brother, Justin Johanningmeier, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Theresa Jansen; three brothers, Charles Johanningmeier, William Johanningmeier and Owen Johanningmeier; and a grandbaby, Alexandria Ward.

An Elmer Johanningmeier Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would especially like to thank all the wonderful caregivers at Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center for all of the support and love they provided.
