COLESBURG, Iowa - Paul A. Diers, 79, of Colesburg, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville, due to complications of diabetes.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Colesburg, with the Rev. John J. Frederick officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 582, of Colesburg. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 2 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Thursday at church.

Mr. Diers was partner with L.A. Light Construction Co., he became a superintendent for Wendling Quarries when Light was sold to Wendling and later was superintendent for Kulman Construction when they purchased Wendling.

He was born on Feb. 6, 1924, in rural New Vienna, son of Isadore and Alma (Ferring) Diers. He married Eunice Koeneke on Aug. 26, 1948, in Colesburg. Three daughters were born to this union.

He served in the Army during World War II in the 24th Infantry Division 14th Regiment Anti Tank Co. His unit was the first to be in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan, after the atom bomb was dropped. He was a member of Legion Post 582, in Colesburg.

He loved his daughters, all the grandchildren and especially his great-grandchildren. He loved to camp, work in the garden and just putter around. He never sat still.

Surviving are his wife, Eunice, of Colesburg; three daughters, Patricia (David) Steil, of Colesburg, Paula (Tom) Holland, of Mentor, Ohio, and Suzanne (John) Hamilton, of Virginia Beach, Va.; eight grandchildren, David Steil, Amy Kephart, Douglas Steil, Jennifer Holland, Michael Holland, Andrew Holland, Candice Hamilton and Crystal Hamilton; six great-grandchildren, Gabrielle and Bradin Steil and Samantha, Crystal, Kirisia and Rachael Kephart; a brother, James (Verna Mae) Diers Sr., of New Vienna; and two sisters, Anna Mae (Edmund) Steffen, of Delhi, and Jeanette (Conrad) Tegeler, of Manchester.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Alice Rausch and Joan Ellerbach.
