William Schmitt, 18, living east of Monona, was drowned in Wellman's pond Tuesday afternoon about three o'clock, while in bathing with three boys, says the Monona Leader. He had autoed to town with his parents, who were attending the Hall funeral, and hwile waiting for them went to the pond to bathe; he was on a plank and slipped off and being unable to swim was unable to recover the board again. His cry for help brought Kermit Klinge, who with Merwin Musseer were in the water at the time. Kermit making a heroic effort to save him, being pulled under the water himself before finally giving up. Merwin in the meantime ran to the home of H.T. Orr and telephoned for help. A number of men who were attending the Hall funeral a block or so away heard the cries and hurried to the pond. Tom Conwell being one of them, dived into the water and recovered the body and two doctors worked over it for nearly two hours in a vain endeavor to revive life.
