Died at Elkader
Saturday afternoon word reached here that Frederick Ernst, who until a short time ago, had made his home in this city, had died at 2:30 o'clock that day. Mr. Ernst was a man a little past seventy-six years of age. He had resided in Iowa for over fifty years, most of the time in Highland township, Clayton county, where he was engaged in farming. A few years ago he retired and moved to this city. About three years ago he was stricken with an attack of paralysis from the effects of which he never fully recovered.

His loving wife, a companion for over half a century, passed away some two years ago. After her death Mr. Ernst made his home with his sister, Mrs. A. Ely and her husband until last fall when he went to live with his daughter, Mrs. John Layton and family of Elkader. Ever since his sickness of three years ago, Mr. Ernst has been gradually failing, and his passing away, though sudden, was not entirely unexpected by those who were familiar with his sickness.

He was a veteran of the civil war, a man well liked and respected by all of his large acquaintance and one who helped with the upbuilding of our country both as a pioneer and a soldier. Funeral services were held at the Illyria church Monday and interrment was made in the cemetery there.

__________________________________________

Saturday afternoon, May 1st, 1909 at the residence of his son-in-law, John Layton, in this place, occurred the death of Frederick D. Ernest.

Mr. Ernest was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, March 20th, 1833. He, with his parents, came to America the same year and settled in Ohio, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Lisetta Klingman Oct. 13, 1853. They resided in Ohio until the year 1856, when they moved to Highland, Iowa where they built a home and lived, they sold the farm and moved to Elgin, where they lived until his wife's death, which occurred March 20, 1907. To this union were born eight children, two sons and six daughters: Frederick L., Mrs. Louisa Fritz, Mrs. Lisetta Reichert, Albert, Mrs. Ella Rawson, Mrs. Anna Layton, Mary and Mrs. Cora Doty. Of all the children, only Fred L. and Mrs. Layton survive their parents. There are sixteen grand-children and four great grandchildren, one brother, John Ernst and one sister, Irene Ely, who survive him.

Mr. Ernest was a soldier in the Civil War. He enlisted in 1864 on Oct 5th in Co. K, 15th Regiment of Iowa Infantry and service until the end of the war.

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest were members of the Universalist church for a great many years. The funeral was held Monday. A short service was held by Rev. C.H. Franke at the Layton home where a number of friends were gathered, also the members of Boardman Post that were in town. The remains were then taken to the Union church in Illyria township, where Rev. Mr. Franke conducted the funeral service. The interment was in the Illyria cemetery beside his wife and children.

Another old soldier has answered the call and been mustered with the Grand Army above.
