Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Norma Jean Way, age 71, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 20 at the United Methodist Church in Volga, Iowa. Leonard Funeral Home of Elkader, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Terry Carpenter, Robb Wessels, Douglas Palmer, Nicholas Dudley, Jeff Dudley, Cade Saeugling, and Cey Saeugling.
Norma Jean, daughter of William and Irene (Peterman) Moore, was born on March 10, 1930 in Nevada, Iowa. She was raised and educated in the area and graduated from Volga High School in 1947. She was united in marriage to Calvin Way on March 28, 1948 at the United Methodist Church in Volga. They became the parents of four children. Norma worked for Crandall's Grocery Store in Volga and worked at Miller's Dairy in Elkader, Iowa for sixteen years. She also worked at the Volga City Library, Volga City Opera House, Theis Clothing in Elkader, Iowa, did babysitting and ran a housekeeping service for many years. Norma was president of the Clayton County Legion Auxiliary, Unit 327 Volga Legion Auxiliary, and Disabled America Veterans of Oelwein Legion Auxiliary Chapter #17.
Norma was treasurer of the Unit 327 Legion of Volga, a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women of Volga, chairman of Administrative Council of United Methodist Church and secretary of United Methodist Church Council of Volga. She was a Sunday School teacher, president of the Volga Study Club, secretary of the Volga Study Club, vice president of Hillcrest Cemetery Association and treasurer of Volga Alumni Association. She enjoyed family gatherings, dancing with her husband, cake decorating, baking, canning and visiting with her friends and family.
Norma Jean Way died Thursday, August 16, 2001 at her home in Volga, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Norma Jean is survived by her husband, Calvin of Volga; 4 children, Pamela (Joe) Carpenter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Donald (Trisha) Way of Hiawatha, Iowa, Debra (Wint Barth) Wessels of Independence, Iowa, and Lisa (Don) Dudley of Caddo Mills, Texas; 9 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Maxine (Chuck Greathouse) Stepp of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Kay (Jerry) Copeland of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a brother, Larry (Charlotte) Moore of Elkader, Iowa; and many special nieces and nephews.
