Guttenberg - A 35-year-old Edgewood man, Donald J. Hyde, rural Elkport, is being held in the Clayton County jail, Elkader, on a charge of murder. According to law enforcement agents, Hyde allegedly shot and killed hs wife, Cynthia, 19, on Essmann Island, about two miles north of here at 9 p.m. Friday. Mrs. Hyde, who was allegedly separated from her husband, was visiting a friend at a rented cabin on the north end of the island when her husband came to see her. The man allegedly shot the woman several times with a small caliber revolver, authorities said. The woman Mrs. Hyde was staying with called authorities. Other persons in the area reported to law enforcement officials they had heard the shots. Hyde reportedly submitted himself to the officers, offering no resistance.
Hyde was taken by authorities to the magistrate here and bond was set at $100,000. He was taken to the Clayton County jail where he is being held. The Clayton County medical examiner, Dr. Michael Downey, had the woman's body taken from the Appleton Funeral Home, Edgewood, to St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, for an autopsy. Investigating the case along with the Clayton County sheriff's office were the Iowa Highway Patrol, the Guttenberg and Garnavillo police departments.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Appleton Funeral Home for Mrs. Hyde, with burial in the Asbury Cemetery, Elkport. Survivors include: one son, John, 2; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Beatty, rural Edgewood; five sisters; two brothers; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Forsythe, rural Edgewood.
