Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Joseph Alex Berns died Sunday, July 15 at his rural Monona, Iowa home.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona. Father John Moran officiated and burial was in the church cemetery. Schultz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Gene Berns, Bill Wagner, Jerry Heller, Ronnie Berns, Jim Keehner, and David Sullivan. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Grady, Gaylord Trappe, Harold Trappe, Norbert Fritz, Don Schofield, Bernell Kliefoth, Seigel Sanger, Paige Buerger, and Paul Buerger.
Joseph was born April 9, 1921 in rural Monona, Iowa to Alex and Cecelia (Fassbinder) Berns. He received his education at St. Patrick's Catholic School and Monona High School. On January 16, 1960 he married Avis Decker at St. Patrick's Church. They farmed on his home farm in Giard Township, Clayton County, Iowa. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church and Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife; a son Kevin Berns of Buffalo, Illinois, Kathy Meese of Roanoke, Texas, Joyce Kregel, Jean Mueller, and Julie Kruse, all of Monona, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Hubert Berns of Monona, Iowa and Leo Berns of Postville, Iowa; and 4 sisters, Jean McGuire and Delores Wagner of Monona, Iowa, Teresa Heller of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, and Agnes Sullivan of Waterloo, Iowa.
