Marjorie Hofer

Marjorie Margaret Hofer, daughter of Philip Jacob and Maud (Olson) Walter, was born September 13, 1915 in Clayton County near Luana, Iowa. She died Saturday, January 13, 1996 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. She was 80 years old.

She was confirmed August 28, 1948 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Goose Lake, Iowa. Margie attended the Eno School near her home. On April 28, 1934, she was married to Melbert Hofer. To this union, eight children were born. The family farmed near Luana and the St. Olaf areas. Margie lived in Low Moor, Iowa, where she was employed by the Lord Baltimor Box Company in Clinton for many years. She moved to Clermont in 1982 and became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville in 1990. Marjorie was a member of the Elgin Lutheran Church and the Women of ELCA.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Melbert who died in 1979, a brother, Clifford Walter and a daughter-in-law, Linda (Mrs. Philip Hofer). Surviving are her children, Ronald (Jean) Hofer of Luana, Philip (Mildred) Hofer of Postville, Gloria (Henry) Lamphere of Epworth, Richard (Velma) Hofer of Springfield, Or., James (Sue) Hofer of Birmingham, Ala., Susan (Ted) Hughes of Postville, Connie Lokenvitz of Louisville, Ky. and D. Michael (Lollie) Hofer of Omaha, Neb.

Also surviving are grandchildren, Kevin, Kim, Mark, Barbara, Jolene, LeRoy and Jerry Hofer, Julie Popelka; step-grandson, Gary Schmitt; Gary Lamphere, Teresa Ostwinkle, John Lampher; Leonard Hofer, Margaret Hofer, step-grandson, Gordon Halderman; Tamara Roling, Scott Torkelson, Renae Lembke; step-grandchildren, Ted, Melissa and Kristina Hughes, Carl Lokenvitz; Michael Hofer, Christina Hofer,; great grandchildren, Garrett and Jean Hofer, Sarah Hofer, Jessica, Jacob and Joselin Popelka, Amy, Kristine and Robert Ostwinkle, Olivia and Cody Lamphere, Kristen, Cara and Jennifer Hofer, Nicole and Matt Roling, Jennifer, Tiffany and Aaron Halderman, six step-great grandchildren, Carl, Kevin and David Schmitt, Laurie Lingenfelter, Crystal Hirst and Mari Short; five great great grandchildren, Kevin Lingenfelter, Brandi Lingenfelter, Angelica Hirst, Alexander Hirst, and Alisia Short.

Also surviving are a sister Sylvia Meyer of Mesa, Ariz., two aunts, Lillie Trudo of Luana and Bertha Bigler of Knoxville, sister-in-law, Bertha Walter of Luana, June Hofer of Napa Valley, Calif., Irene Hofer of Clermont, brothers-in-law, Richard (Eileen) Dupont of Mundelein, Ill., Art Hofer of Lake Geneva, Wis., and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 17, 1996 at Elgin Lutheran Church at Elgin, Iowa. Rev. Kathleen R. Soldwisch officiated. The organist was Sara Strong, Casket bearers were her grandchildren. The Schutte Funeral Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the United Brethren Cemetery, rural St. Olaf, Iowa.
