Funeral services for Mrs. Fred Aulwes, who passed away at her home last Tuesday morning, April 7th, were held from the home last Thursday afternoon. the deceased was 78 years old and was born in Mecklenburg, Germany. She came to this country at the age of 15 years and settled near Guttenburg, Iowa, where most of her life was spent. About 60 years ago she was united in marriage to Fred Aulwes at Guttenburg. Ten children were born to them, two dying in infancy. The children surviving are: Mrs. Herman Petermann of Napa, Calif., Mrs. Henry Dittmer of Ireton, Gus Aulwes of Lennox, S.D., Mrs. Arthur Greenwaldt of Neptune, Iowa, Mrs. Adrian Carnes of Beresford, S.D., E.J. Aulwes of Gary, S.D., F.H. Aulwes of Minneapolis and Arthur Aulwes of Detroit, Mich.

Mrs. Helena (nee Meyer) Aulwes passed beyond at her home at Ireton, on April 7th. She was born in Mekelenberg [sic], Germany, on Oct. 12, 1846 and was therefore 78 years 5 months and 26 days of age. The subject of this life sketch was educated in Germany, coming to America in 18[illegible] and was united in marriage to Fred W. Aulwes, living in or near Guttenberg, Iowa, until 1920 when they moved to Ireton.

They were blessed with 10 children, but two, one boy and one girl died very young. Four boys and four girls are living and all but two were at her bedside when the end came. Following are their names: Gust F. Aulwes of Lennox, S.D.; Mrs. Henry Dittmer of Ireton; Mrs. Arthur Greenwaldt of Neptune; Arthur F. of Detroit; Mrs. A. Carnes of Beresford, S.D.; Emil J. of Gary, S.D. and Fred H. of Minneapolis. They have 26 grandchildren and two great grandchildren and also other relatives at St. Cloud, Minn., Havre, Mont. and at Guttenberg and many friends wherever she was known.

Mrs. Aulwes was a member of the Rebekkah lodge of Guttenberg ever since 1861, or 59 years, and was considered the oldest Rebekkah in Iowa. Her husband, who survives her, is 85 years old and a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge for 64 years. Both were members of the Yeomen lodge for many years also.

Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Niebruege of the Presbyterian church of Lennox, S.D. on April 9th, the beautiful service being read in both German and English. The family has the sympathy of the entire Ireton community.
