Allen C. Thoday was born at Willingham, Cambridgeshire, England, January 19, 1867, and died at the Lenth hospital in Elkader May 24th, 1928, aged 61 years, 4 months and 12 days. He was the fourth son of John A. and Harriet Thoday and one of a family of twelve children. His parents had lived in America for some time, and in 1860 they returned to England, where they were residing when Allen was born.
He received his education in the schools of England, and in 1885, at the age of eighteen, he left his home and native land to seek his fortune is (sic) America. Soon after arriving in this country he came to Clayton county, working for nine years as a farm hand. His habits of thrift enabled him to save a sum which made it possible for him a farm of 180 acres in Sperry township, which has been his home since then.
In 1903 Mr. Thoday was married to Miss Hallie Sangston, who survives him. Mr. Thoday was not only a successful farmer but took an active interest in all matters of public welfare. He served at times as a member of the school board, as an officer of the creamery company, as an officer of the commission company and was at the time of his death a member of the board of directors of one of the Volga banks. He was reared in a Christian home and at the age of eight was baptized in the Baptist faith, that being the faith of his family. He had not changed to any other, though he was a liberal supporter of the Presbyterian church of Volga.
Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his departure three brothers, Ebenezer of Hemmingford, England, Louie of Willingham, England, and Philip of Bristol, England; two sisters, Mrs. Woodbridge of Salmon Arm, British Columbia, and Mrs. Thomas Mathews of Ann Arbor, Mich.; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Chas. Weidner of Dubuque, and other relatives in England. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Volga Sunday afternoon, May 27, at 2:30, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Ernest Bottom. The splendid audience which filled the church to overflowing included not only the people of Volga and vicinity, but friends from other towns. The body was laid to rest in Hillcrest cemetery.
