Ann Sweeney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Sweeney, was born in County Wicklow, Ireland March 12, 1847. She came to America at the age of four years, settling at Madison, Wisconsin, where she was married to James Hannon, October 19, 1867. The same year they moved to Clayton County, Ia., where they lived on a farm near Elkader for thirty-three years, then moved to Volga, where they spent the declining years with their son, Michael, on the farm near Volga.
Mr. Hannon preceded her in death on March 11, 1924. She is survived by the following children: Michael and Mrs. John Shea of Volga, Mrs. W. J. Roach, Thomas Hannon and Mrs. Pete Feeney of Elkader, Edward, Patrick and Joseph Hannon of Chicago, one sister Mrs. Sara O’Neal of Chicago, seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. All of the children were with her with the exception of Edward who is ill at his home in Chicago.
Mrs. Hannon was a good mother, one of the pioneer women who endured hardships in early days.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 14th, at the Sacred Heart Church in Volga, Rev. Cregan officiating.
Pall bearers were four grandsons, Gerald, Ralph and Joe Feeney, Donald Shea, and two nephews, Raphael and Will Orr.
