Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Mary Strien were held Friday, December 18, 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Father John Moran officiated. Schultz Funeral Home, Monona, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Robert Melcher, Adelbert "Butch" Whittle, David Fox, Edward Parker, Dennis Moon, and Marvin Mohs. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery.
Mary was born in Monona, Iowa February 9, 1898 to parents John and Mary (Krivanek) Mista. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. She received her education in the Monona school, graduating from high school in 1915. She received her teaching certificate and taught in rural schools for many years.
On June 10, 1920 she married Fred Strien in Monona, Iowa. The couple farmed near Farmersburg for several years. They later moved into Monona. In Monona, they owned a livestock buying for 16 years. Mary served as the bookkeeper. After retirement the couple continued to make their home in Monona.
Mary died Monday December 14, 1987 at Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa. She was a member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church and Rosary Society.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Fred, who died June 19, 1969; a step-daughter, Lillian Jenkins; and 2 brothers Joe Mista and John Mista.
Surviving is one sister, Agnes Girot of Monona, Iowa; 2 step-grandchildren and 1 step-great grandchild; and nieces and nephews.
