Funeral Services For William Doerring

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at St. John's Lutheran Church in Luana for William Doerring, 63, who passed away at Postville Hospital on January 7.

The rites were in charge of Rev. L. W. Heuther, pastor of St. John's. Burial was in the Luana cemetery.

William Doerring, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joachim Doerring, was born December 30, 1869 in Altkales, Meklenburg, Germany. In Dormitz he was baptized and later confirmed.

His boyhood days were spent in the land of his birth. At the age of 15 he emigrated with his parents to America where he made his home in Farmersburg, Clayton county, Iowa. Not many years thereafter, the family moved on a farm near Luana, now occupied by Elmer Landt. Here he grew to manhood. April 2, 1895 he was united in marriage to Miss Frederike Marie Garms in the house on the farm which today is known as the Henry Gisleson farm, south of Luana. For awhile they lived with his parents. In 1908 the young couple moved on a farm south of the Luana high school, where they lived until the time of their retirement in the fall of 1932 when they moved into the new home which they built in Luana.

It was their good fortune to be able to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary April 2, 1945. So too it brought happiness to the deceased when on Sunday, December 30 his children gathered in his home to celebrate his 83rd birthday on which occasion his grandchildren sang the birthday song.

The deceased always took a lively interest in the affairs of his church and community. He held offices in the church and sang in the choir. He was active in his home, church and community. Some weeks ago his physical condition began to decline. On January 4 he suffered a stroke, was taken to the Postville Hospital where he passed away Monday afternoon January 7, at 2:20 p.m. He attained the age of 83 years and eight days.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one granddaughter, Jeannette and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Vogt.

He is survived by six sons: Orville of Luana, Elmer, pastor of Highland Park Lutheran Church, St. Paul, Minnesota, Lorenz and John of Luana, William of Villa Park, Illinois, and Alvin of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, two brothers, Charlie of Luana and August of Kenosha, Wisconsin; one sister, Mrs. Anna Muller of Monona.

A couple of corrections to the obituary:

Age at death was 83, not 63.

He was survived by 20 grandchildren, not 10 grandchildren. I am no. 20, born in 1946.
