Ralph Oliver Sargent was born March 4, 1904, son of Emery and Ophelia Waite Sargent, on a farm near Strawberry Point, Iowa. He attended country schools in the area and graduated from Strawberry Point, High School. After his graduation he went to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he worked in a bank for a short time. Returning to Strawberry Point, Ralph worked for Don Courtnage in the Drug Store for about two years. Then, October 1925 he and his brother, Stanley formed a partnership in the feed and coal business which lasted until 1940. During that time, in 1932, they bought a farm on Hewitt Creek and went into the purebred Holstein dairy business.

Ralph married Alma Bushkofsky on September 10, 1930. A short time later, they moved to the Hewitt Creek farm. In 1944 they moved to a farm near Alpha, Iowa and lived there for four years. Their stay near Alpha was followed by their return to the Hewitt Creek farm where they lived an additional two years, until their retirement to Strawberry Point in 1950. Ralph’s hobbies were gardening and flowers. He was also very devoted to his family. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Strawberry Point.

Ralph died on Monday, July 28, 1980 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa due to a massive stroke which took place on July 2 following vascular surgery the day before.
