Harold Dohrer
Long time Elkader resident Harold C. Dohrer, passed away November 27th, 2010. He was 98 years old. He was born June 5th, 1912 on the Dohrer homestead farm in Cox Creek Township, Clayton County, Iowa. Harold received his education at the Dohrer Country School, and then took over the farming of the homestead farm.
He was married to Bernice Simons of Colesburg, Iowa on November 28th, 1933. They farmed near Colesburg Iowa where a daughter, Rita Jane (1935) and a son Larry (1941), were born. In 1942 they bought the family homestead near Elkader, Iowa from his siblings. They farmed there until 1959 when they moved to Elkader.
Harold did several jobs until he started selling investments and real estate. He finally retired in 1992 after a serious car accident. In 2004 he moved into the Elkader Care Center. He relocated to the Heritage Manor retirement home in Dubuque, Iowa in 2008, where he lived until his death.
Harold was a life long member of the Peace Church in Elkader where he was baptized and confirmed. He was a charter member of the Keystone Barbershop Chorus, which was formed in1952 in Elkader, and sang with them until 2008. He was a long time member of the Elkader Lions Club. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing the rivers in Clayton County. Harold also liked dancing but most of all, he just enjoyed visiting with
people.Harold is survived by his son Larry Dohrer and his wife Paula of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, four Grandchildren, and six Great Grandchildren, Timothy Dohrer and his wife Stephanie and their children, Catherine and Rebecca of Northfield, Illinois, Thomas Dohrer and his wife Tracy and their children, Abigail and Lucy of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Jeffery Rieck and his son Joel of Columbus, Ohio, Jennifer Herbst and her husband Timothy and their son Mitchell of Lewis Center, Ohio and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice, his daughter Jayne (Rita) Rieck, three brothers, John (Jack), Charles (Chuck), and Robert (Bob), five sisters, Hilda Clough, Martha Crimmons, Katherine (Kate) Nelson, Mildred (Millie) Whitham, and Mary Jane Dohrer.
A private graveside service was held at Elkader Eastside Cemetery. A memorial service celebrating Harold’s life will be held at Peace Church in Elkader, Iowa on June 18th, 2011 at 11:00 AM.
