Dr. G.F. Kelleher Passes On Monday

It is with a sorrow in which the entire community shares that we are called upon to announce the passing of Dr. G.F. Kelleher at his hospital in this city at 12:30 o'clock on Monday morning, October 23, 1933, after a few brief yours of suffering from sore injuries received in an automobile accident at Clermont four hours before his demise.

Dr. George F. Kelleher, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Kelleher, was born in Elkader, Iowa, November 12, 1884, and recieved his early educaton in the parochial and public schools of that city. Being desirous of preparing himself for the medical profession he took a two years pre-medical course in St. Ignatius College, following which he took a full four years medical course at the University of Illinois, graduating with high honors. This was followed by an interneship in the West Side Hospital in Chicago. With this fine foundation for his life's work he returned to his home city of Elkader, where he practiced medicine for one year, coming to Postville in 1916 and associating himself with Dr. F.W. Kiesau under the firm name of Kiesau & Kelleher. This co-partnership continued for but a short time before it was dissolved by mutual consent, Dr. Kelleher continuing his business in the rooms over the Luhman & Sanders store and equipped it as a hospital, which business he continued with marked success until the close of his earlthly career.

Although he was one who might be called a young practitioner, Dr. Kelleher attained high distinction as a thorough and capable physician and surgeon, and was always held in high esteem by the members of his profession throughout this section of the state, and will be sadly missed not only by these but as well by those who he has so long and faithfully served.

On June 2nd, 1915, he was united in marriage at Dubuque with Miss Carrie W. Baker*, and their union was blessed by three children, George, 17, now a student at Columbia College, Dubuque; Robert, 15, and Jean, 13, both at home. Aside from the wife and children he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Kelleher, of Elkader; two brothers, Joseph of Manchester and Harry of Elkader; four sisters, Kathryn at home; Mrs. John Hughes of Chicago, Mrs. Albert Heiden of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Mrs. Leo Killerlain of Elkader; and many other relatives and a host of friends.

Dr. Kelleher was known to all as a genial and honorable man, and all who knew him will sorrow that he is no more and extend their hearty and tenderest sympathy to those bound to him by a closer tie. He was a member of the Postville Commercial Club and ever interested in promoting those things which tended to the advancement of his home city and community. The funeral was held from St. Bridget's Catholic church in this city at nine o'clock on Wednesday morning, the Rev. Father Hogan conducting the Requiem High Mass, and the church was filled to overflowing by the many friends who wished to pay their last tribute of respect to his memory, every business place in town closing during the funeral hour. Interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery at Elkader.
