AN OLD PIONEER IS GONE
Geo. Waite Dead who Resided near County Corners since 1856

On Tuesday afternoon, May 30th, at his home near County Corners, occurred the death of G.W. Waite, after a lingering illness with cancer of the stomach. He has been very low for some time, and the news of his death was not unexpected, yet it came as a shock to all who knew him. The deceased was born at Clifton Park, Saratoga County, New York. On the 3d day of November, 1848, he was married to Louis Beers, at Clifton Park. They remained in the east several years after their marriage coming to Iowa in 1856. They settled on their place near the County Corners, a few miles southwest of town, where he since resided. In those early days it was mostly a wild and lonely prairie, and here they underwent the usual privations that fall to the lot of pioneers in a new country. After forty-eight years of happy wedded life, death came and broke the marriage bond on earth, the wife and mother being called home on the 11th of July 1896. Seven children blessed their union, five of whom are left to mourn the loss of a father. They are: Livingston and Onie Waite who reside on the old homestead, and the Mesdames Olive Cole, Eva Benson and Ophelia Sargent. Mr. Waite was a man honored and respected by all who knew him. He was a good neighbor, a kind father and husband. He was a staunch Methodist, and a true Christian, a believer in the Golden Rule, which he always tried to exemplify in his life. Living in that neighborhood for nearly fifty years, he was known by everyone for many miles around, and in his death many feel the loss of a personal friend. For many years he was one of the leading members of the church at County Corners. It was at this church the funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, May 31st, conducted by Revs. O.C. DePuy and J. F. Hestwood. It was very largely attended. Many members of the Grand Army post of this place were present. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery just east of the church there to remain until the last great day when the dead in Christ shall rise. We join with the many friends in extending sympathy to the sorrowing members of the family.

Henry Howard Post Says,
The death of Comrade George Waite marked still another gap in the ranks of the Grand Army of the Republic which can never be filled. He was a good soldier, and a loyal member of the post to which he belonged. We shall always miss his answer to roll call, and tender our heartfelt sympathies to the loving and living members of his family.
