Conrad John Schlein, son of Peter Schlein and Dorothea (Bauhman) Schlein, was born February 19, 1888 in Steckles-Hausen, Germany. He died Monday, September 28, 1970 at the Postville hospital at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 9 days.

He attended schools in Germany after which he worked as a Drayman and in the coal mines. In 1913,at the age of 25 he came to America, becoming a naturalized citizen in February 1942. On November 28, 1918 he was united in marriage to Rose Klotzbach. To this union were born four children. He was engaged in farming until moving into Monona. For the past year he has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Iowa.

Conrad was active in church work at Giard, was now a member of the First Methodist Church, served as Township trustee, Director of Monona Creamery and was instrumental in organizing the Farm Bureau in Clayton County.

Preceding him in death were his wife, 4 brothers and 1 sister in Germany; one brother William and one sister, Martha Schlein Bergman; one grandson, Jackie Schlein. He leaves to cherish his memory three sons: William, Burton and Milton; one daughter, Hilda (Mrs. Willis Timmerman); 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Conrad John Schlein, 82, were held Thursday morning October 1 at 10:30 at First Methodist Church in Monona with Rev. Pacholke officiating. Burial was in the Monona Cemetery.

Services were held Thursday, October 1, 1970 at the United Methodist Church in Monona, for Conrad Schlein, 80 year old retired Monona farmer. Mr. Schlein, father of Dr. Milton F. Schlein, Postville, died Monday, September 28, 1970 at Postville Community Hospital.

Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Willis (Hildegard) Timmerman, two sons, Burton and William, all of Monona; thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
