Dubuque Deaths
Mrs. Ben Chapman, 80, died at her home in Vernon Township, Dubuque County, (Iowa) Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock, after a short illness.
She was born Johanna Ryan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ryan, at Littleport, Ia., on Oct. 13, 1863. She lived at Littleport until Jan. 7, 1885, when she was married to Ben Chapman at Placid by the Rev. Comerford. The couple went to live in Vernon Township.
She was a member of the Holy Family Church, New Mellary, the Rosary Society, and the League of the Sacred Heart.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Joseph P. Smith, Farley, Ia., Mrs. Fred Stempfle, Oelwein, Ia., and Mrs. Francis J. McDermott, Luxemburg; four sons, Louis, Hopkinton, Elmer, North Buena Vista, and John and Bernard, at home; one son-in-law, Joe McDonald, Dubuque; 25 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, in 1930, one daughter, and one sister.
The body has been transferred from the Sanner Funeral Home, Farley, to the family residence from where the funeral will be held to the Holy Family Church, New Mellary, Monday at 9:30 o’clock. The Rev. Placid Magee will celebrate the requiem mass. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
