SPLIES, CORA CHRISTINE

Funeral services for Cora Christine Splies, 90, were held Friday morning, September 5, 1969 at 11 o'clock at Schultz's Funeral home in Monona with Rev. Paul V. Clements of the Monona United Methodist church officiating. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery, Monona, Iowa.

Miss Splies died Tuesday, September 2, 1969 at the Postville Hospital. She was born August 15, 1879 on a farm near Farmersburg, the daughter of John and Wilhelmine (Meyer) Splies. She attended rural school at Froelich when her parents moved to a farm near there while she was a small child. She started her religious training in the Old Prairie Evangelical Church. She attended high school at McGregor. As a young girl she served as an apprentice to a seamstress at McGregor, Iowa. Later she did sewing in the Froelich area, going from house to house as her duties required.

In 1910, she accompanied her parents when they moved to Monona and here she continued her work as a seamstress. She joined the Monona Methodist Church and became very active in church work here, teaching in the Sunday school for some 40 years, and for many years was very active in all phases of the young people's programs. For a number of years she operated a dress shop.

After the death of her father in 1927, she did some sewing at the family home but gradually trans-ferred her activities to quilt making. In this work, she custom finished quilts and bedspreads for hundreds of people, not only in this vicinity but for friends many miles away. It was her habit to memorize hymns as she worked at her quilting frames and she thus came to know by heart all of her favorite religious songs.

She was also very interested in her gardens and took great pride in her flowers and was active in the Monona Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her mother having died in April 1937. Surviving are a sister, Rose Hubacher of Madison, Wisconsin, a niece, Mrs. Selwyn Otis of Arlington, Virginia; a nephew, Howard Hubacher of Madison, Wisconsin and their seven children and 20 grandchildren. Also surviving are a number of cousins.

Music at the services was provided by Mrs. Thomas James, soloist, and Mrs. Ivon J. Schultz, organist. Pallbearers were Grover Miller, Lloyd Drahn, Don Hubacher, Bob Hubacher, Jim Hubacher, and Harvey Marting.
