Marcella Elizabeth Backhaus, the daughter of William and Bertha (Neverman) Wilke, was born August 28, 1919, at Dubuque, Iowa. She was baptized June 6, 1920 at St. John Lutheran, Luana, Iowa and confirmed January 29, 1939 at St.Paul's Lutheran, Monona, Iowa. She attended school at Luana Consolidated. She was united in marriage to Marvin Jarms on September 20, 1938 at Monona. He died in 1957. To this union, one daughter Carol Ann was born. On June 9, 1959, she was united in marriage to Delmar Backhaus at St.Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. To this union one son, Daniel, was born. After moving from Monona, she transferred her membership to DeSoto Lutheran Church, DeSoto, Wisconsin and was a member of the Peace Circle. She was a loving wife and mother.

She died Tuesday, October 12, 1982, at Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wisconsin after a brief illness. She reached the age of 63 years, 1 month, and 14 days.

Preceding her in death were her parents, a twin sister, Mardella, her first husband, Marvin.

Surviving her is her husband, Delmar, DeSoto, Wisconsin; her daughter, Mrs. Lyle (Carol Ann) Schaal, Guttenberg, Iowa, son Daniel, DeSoto, Wisconsin;, two brothers, Harlan Wilke of Monona, Wilson Wilke, Postville, one sister Mrs. Theo (Pearl) Timmerman, Monona, Iowa.

Additional information: Funeral services were held at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, Iowa with Pastor Rich Pearson officiating. The pallbearers were Laraldo Wahls, Harvey Reinhardt, LaVern Meyer, William Livingood, Gaylord Moose, and Harlin Miller. Burial was in the St.Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Monona, Iowa. The Schultz Funeral Home, Monona, Iowa handled the arrangements.
