Howard Barnes, 84, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 13, at 1:30 p.m., at the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder, with the Rev. Marshall Hahn officiating.
Corrine Landsgard was the organist. Special music was provided by David Wilker, Kim Wilker and Kara Koopman.
Casket bearers were James Steele, Darrin Steele, David Selck, Douglas Miller, Wayne Selck, Braden Griffith and Korey Wilker.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Military honors were provided by the American Legion of Postville and Wayne Selck played taps. The Schutte Funeral Service handled arrangements.
Howard Benjamin Barnes was born Oct. 14, 1914, to Delia Barnes at Fennimore, Wis. He attended school at Guttenberg.
He was inducted into the United States Army June 20, 1942, and served in the Medical Corps until his discharge in 1945.
On May 30, 1942, Howard was married to Agnes Noretta Ruroden at Clayton Center. To this union seven children were born. They lived in the St. Olaf area and then moved to their home north of Monona, where they lived for many year
For 24 years, Howard worked at the rock quarry north of Elkader, which was owned by H.. Leslie Leas and then Roverud Construction. Following his wife's death, Howard moved to Farmersburg.
Surviving are six daughters, Allenor and Wilbur Selck of Atkins, Sherry and Robert Griffith of Marion, Dorothy and Steve Wilson of Marion, Karen and Kenneth Wilker of St. Olaf, Vicky and Frank Miller of Decorah, and Debbie Barnes of Hiawatha; 15 grandchildren, James Steele (Lisa), Darrin Steele (Shannon), David Selck (Tracie), Wayne Selck, Wendy Selck, Rebecca, Braden, Raychelle and Noretta Griffith, Theresa Wilson, Kim and Korey Wilker, Kara Wilker Koopman (Craig), Douglas Miller and Jennifer Miller Lovstuen (Russell); nine great grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob and Sarah Steele, William Erin and Jessie Steele, Draven Kiser, Taylor Selck and Kody Denard; and two step-sisters, Agnes and Francis Everett of Marion and Lena Funk of Dubuque.
