Larson, Stanley Mervin 1950-1997

Funeral services for Stanley Mervin Larson were held Monday, February 24, 1997 at Highland Lutheran Church of rural Elkader with Rev. Kathleen Soldwisch officiating. Internment was in Highland Lutheran Cemetery of rural Elkader. Leonard Funeral Home of Elkader was in charge of arrangements.

He was born the son of Mervin and Elva Mae Larson on July 21, 1950 in McGregor, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church of rural Elkader, Iowa. Stanley attended Central Community Schools and graduated in 1968 from John R. Mott High School in Postville.

Stanley is survived by his fiance, Margaret Morarend of Elgin, IA, his parents, Mervin and Elva Mae Larson of Postville, IA, three daughters, Shelley Dawson of Elkader, IA, Sabrina Larson of Postville, IA, and Sonya Larson of Elgin, IA, three sisters, Sandra Larson of Northville, MI, Shirleen (Michael) Reinhardt of Elgin, IA, Karma (Charles) Poesch of Jacksonville, IL, grandson, Tyler Anderson, granddaughter, Sierra Dawson, two nieces, two nephews, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents and one aunt.

Stanley was a member of Highland Lutheran Church where he had served on the council, American Legion Post 352 of Elgin, IA, Northeast Iowa Vietnam Veterans, and Iowa Trappers Association.

He was a Sgt. in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Republic of Vietnam from March 17, 1969 to September 29, 1969 and from December 2, 1969 to February 11, 1970. Stanley took employment with Norplex Laminates for eleven years; he then worked for Iowa State University-Northeast Iowa Demonstration Project; his most recent employment was with the Miss Marquette Riverboat and Casino. He was also a longtime caretaker of the Highland Lutheran Cemetery near Elkader.

Stanley enjoyed his work and friends at the Miss Marquette Riverboat. He will also be remembered as one who enjoyed the outdoors, including trapping, fishing, gardening, and working farmers markets. He was well known for the care he put into his hobbies.

The family would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to the Heart of Iowa Hospice of West Union, Iowa.

Honorary casket bearers were Bernard Fangman, Harry Hanson, Paul Olson, Irvin Bush, Earl Lembke and Eldon Kurth, Jr. Casket bearers were Brenda Balke, Susan Aulwes, Jamie Burgin, Denny Schroeder, Kurtis Kishman, Tom Edie, Jake Shurman and Carla Schultz.
