Looney, Raymond F. 1920-1994

Raymond F. Looney, son of Edward A. and Evelyn A. (Henkes) Looney, was born June 3, 1920 on the home farm in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Luana, Iowa. He died Tuesday, May 17, 1994 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. He was 73.

He attended the Grand Meadow country school and was graduated from Postville High School in 1938. On Nov. 26, 1949 he was married to Mary Downey in St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Monona, Iowa. To this union, four children were born. They farmed on the family place in Grand Meadow Township until 1975, when they moved to their present home on the south edge of Postville. Ray and Mary operated their own feed business for five years.

Ray was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville and had served on the parish council. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Ray will be remembered as a loving and generous husband and father, and as an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

He is preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Edward E., Kenneth, Ambrose and James. Surviving are his wife, Mary; his children, Stan (LuAnn) Looney of Postville, Jim (Karen) Looney of Luana, Kathy (Kevin) Stanford of Cedar Rapids and Marty (Annette) Looney of Marion; five grandchildren; his aunt, Eleanor Koether of Giard; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass was held Friday, May 20, 1994, in St. Bridget Catholic Church, Postville, with the Rev. Roger L. Katz officiating. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Casket bearers were Lance, Michael, Tim and Todd Looney and Stuart Schultz, David Gross, James Lechtenberg and Bernard Sadler. Honorary casket bearers are Eugene Schutte, Lyle Zieman, Delbert Martins, Keith Smith and Rodney Smith.
