Elden August William Lenth was born June 5, 1928 near Monona, Iowa, the son of Hubert and Elsie Ihde Lenth. He passed away March 11, 2010, at 81 years of age.

Elden was baptized July 1, 1928 by Rev. A. Dougs and was confirmed March 29, 1942, by Rev. Herman A. Siefkes, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Monona. Elden was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, since 1954, where he served two terms on the church council. Elden attended Evergreen Grove country school then Monona High School, graduating in 1945. He married Beatrice Turner on August 14, 1949 at the Presbyterian Church in Postville. To this union three children were born: Georgene, Douglas and Barbara. Elden and Bea celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in 2009.

Elden began his farming career on the home farm near Monona, with a herd of Holstein cows he had started in his 4-H days. In 1954, he purchased a farm southeast of Postville. In 1968, Elden purchased his first registered Hereford cows, selling his dairy herd to son-in-law Darrell Hatlevig. His love of Herefords resulted in many awards on a local, state, and national level, and meeting friends all across the country. Proud times included selling breeding stock in many states, as well as to boxer George Foreman, and Alabama Country group member Teddy Gentry.

Over the years, Elden was a member of the IA and National Hereford Assn's, Clayton and Winneshiek County Cattleman's Assn's, Clayton County Farm Bureau, Postville JC's, Postville Little League Manager, and a Golden Harvest Seed Corn dealer. A cabinet full of awards tells the story of his life in the Hereford world, including IA Hereford Hall of Fame, Clayton County Cattleman of the Year, Winneshiek County Pioneer Award, and Jr. Cattleman Supreme Sponsor.

Elden lived an active life enjoying Certified Hereford Beef promotion, catering, feeding the ISU Football team, dancing, bowling, golfing, playing cards with friends and buddies, softball and volleyball, and attending his children's and grandchildren's activities from grade school through college.

Surviving family includes his wife Bea, three children: Georgene (Darrell) Hatlevig, Lanesboro, MN; Douglas (Marilyn) Lenth, Postville; Barbara (Matt) Reynolds, Huntsville, MO; five grandchildren: Brian (Amy) Hatlevig, Webster, MN; John (Jen) Hatlevig, Lakeville, MN; Keri (Ryan) Smith, Burnsville, MN; Tye and Makayla Renolds, Huntsville, MO: five great grand-children; Elsie, Anika and Cole Hatlevig, James and Elle Hatlevig: four step-grandchildren; Shawn, Wes, Chris and Matt Larson: sister Margie (Maurice) Landsgard, St. Olaf; sister-in-law Laura Lenth, Postville; brother-in-law Milton (Mary) Turner, Waukon; sisters-in-law Mary Rush, Arvada, CO; Janice (Gary) Maxwell, Bakersfield, CA, and many nieces and nephews.

Elden was preceded in death by his parents, brother Alvin Lenth, brother-in-law Gene R. Rush, and his father-in law and mother-in-law.

Memorial Services will be held on Monday, March 15, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Steve Brackett will officiate. Private Inurnment will be held at a later date.
