Leeman Rites Held At St. Olaf

Russell William Leeman was born April 17, 1924 at Mt. Vernon, Washington and died on July 23, 1959 at his home near Gunder. He was the son of Russell K. and Marie (Hoyt) Leeman.

He was baptized in the University Methodist Church of Los Angeles, California and was confirmed in Norway Lutheran Church of St. Olaf. He received his elementary education at Sedro Woolley, Washington. He attended high school at Lynwood, California and completed two years at Compton Junior college.

In February 1943 he entered the Army Air Corps and served overseas on Iwo Jima and Saipan. He received his discharge in February, 1946.

He was united in marriage to Arlene Mary Peterson of St. Olaf on November 19, 1946. To this union were born four children: Norman Robert, Janet Arlene, James Russell and Mary Kay.

During the past years and at the time of his death, Mr. Leeman was farming near Gunder. He was a member of Norway Lutheran Church and had served as deacon of this congregation. He was active in American legion work and in community affairs, serving in many capacities. He had been commander, adjutant and was the present service officer of the St. Olaf post and also a past Commander of the Clayton County American Legion. He served on various district committees as well as being recently appointed to the National Rehabilitation Board of the American Legion. He was president of the St. Olaf Cooperative Telephone Company, a member of the Marion township election board and Justice of the Peace for Marion township at the time of his death. In addition to his farm work, he was an insurance agent.

In addition to his parents, wife and children, he is survived by a brother, Robert of Guttenberg, a sister, Joan of Lynwood, California, four nephews, one niece and many other relatives and friends.

Military rites were held at Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf, Thursday, July 27, at 2:00 p.m.
