PASSED AWAY AFTER FOUR DAYS ILLNESS!

John N. Leithold, father of J. V. Leithold, pioneer druggist of this city, died this afternoon shortly before 1 o’clock at his home in this city, 118 First Street, Woodland, CA.

Pneumonia, which seized the victim four days ago, was the cause of the death. Somewhat weakened from a slight illness during the past month and handicapped by old age, Mr. Leithold was unable to combat the attack.

He was a native of Bavaria, Germany, and he lived to February of the coming year would have reached the age of 84.

At the age of 14 he came to America with his parents, via New Orleans and up the Mississippi River to McGregor, Iowa. In 1865 he married there to Miss Isabella Fox who survives him.

A year or so after the marriage they moved to Postville, Iowa, where for more than 30 years he was engaged in the general merchandise business. He also served four years as postmaster at Postville, under Cleveland’s administration.

Mr. Leithold retired from business and about ten years ago he and his wife came to California and located in Woodland whey they have resided ever since.

Besides the widow the following children are survivors: John V. Leithold of Woodland, California, C. F. Leithold of Chinese Camp, Tuolumne county, California, F. C. Leithold of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. E. E. Schliemann of Zamora and Mrs. Byron Case of Watsonville, California.

Mr. Leithold was a devout member of the German Lutheran church and a good Christian in every sense of the word. He was always kind and devoted to his family, and the numerous friends he acquired during his residence here will sincerely mourn his loss.

Funeral arrangements are in the hands of Krellenberg Company.
