Herman J. Gruel who had been in poor health the past few years passed away at the hospital in Postville early Sunday morning. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon with services in the Luana Lutheran church and burial in the Luana Lutheran cemetery.
Herman John Karl Gruel, son of Wilheim and Christine (Mueller) Gruel, was born February 9, 1873 in Garnavillo. He was baptized March 2, 1873. In the spring of 1866 (sic), as a young man he worked as a hired man until February 16, 1897 when he married Miss Wilhelmine Koss. On March 2, they moved on a farm one and a half miles north of Luana. In March of 1932 they moved to Luana. On May 10, he became janitor of St. John's Church until December 1950 when his health became impaired.
He leaves to mourn three children: Viola, Mrs. Wilbert Lenth, of Monona; two sons: Alvin Gruel of Postville and Wilbert Gruel of Decorah.
His wife preceded him in death, November 19, 1946. His father, mother, one brother and one grandson, also preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
