Gottschalk, Leona Antonette (Gusta) 1910-1992

Funeral services were held for Leona Antonette Gottschalk, 81, Monday, May 4, 1992, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. Rev. Lance A. Bentley officiated the service with burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Clayton Center. Pallbearers were Loren Gottschalk, Lee Grimes, Realto Gusta, Jr., James Gusta, Duane Tieden and Russ Wiley.

Leona Gottschalk was born June 26, 1910, at Elkader, the daughter of Otto and Antonette (Muench) Gusta. She grew up and was educated in the area attending locals schools. On August 24, 1929, she was united in marriage to Elmer Gottschalk at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Three children were born to this union. Together they lived and farmed in the Elkader area. She worked several years at the Checkerboard restaurant in Elkader. Her husband died September 23, 1974, and in 1976 she moved to town. She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ. Leona Gottschalk died Wednesday night, April 29, 1992, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo from complications of a stroke.

Survivors include her daughter Elaine Grimes of Decorah; two sons, Don of Cedar Falls, and Glen of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Jan Grimes of Decorah, Lynn Tiemann of Marion, Julie Grimes of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Lee Grimes of Omaha, Neb., Laura and David Gottschalk, both of Cedar Falls, and Caroline and Rachel Gottschalk, both of Burlington; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn (Mrs. Reuben) Glawe of St. Olaf; and two brothers, Realto Gusta of Davenport and Alfred Gusta of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer; a brother Elmer Gusta; a sister, Dina Meenan; and by her parents.
