Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 18 Jun. 1914.

Hon. G. H. Schulte passed away at his home in this place, Wednesday morning, June 17th, at about 9:30. Diabetes was the cause of death and had evidently been sapping his vitality for some time but few realized it as he was about and attending to his business up to about ten days ago. Many knew that he was suffering with a carbuncle on the back of his neck and was under the doctor's care; but when Monday morning it was learned that he was seriously ill and that a specialist had been summoned from Iowa City, the news came as a shock to the community and our people waited anxiously the word that came from the bedside, hoping that the shadow would pass away.

Gerhard Henry Schulte was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Schulte and was born on the old home farm in Clayton township January 21, 1866.

His boyhood days were spent on the farm and he received his early education in the local school. At the age of nineteen he began teaching in the schools of the county and one time was principal of the school at Clayton and later at Hedrick, Iowa. In 1890 he graduated from the Iowa State College at Ames with the degree of Bachelor of Science and in 1891 attended the law department of the State University. He then entered the law office of W. A. Preston at this place and continued his study of law, being admitted to the bar in 1894.

Shortly after that he became associated with John Everall, Jr., in the law firm of Everall & Schulte for several years. but for a number of years past he has practiced alone. June 25th, 1908, he was married to Miss Lillian L. Bridgeford, of Jefferson, Iowa, and since then their hospitable home in the north part of town has been a social center.

Mr. Schulte has always been active in public affairs and was elected State Representative from this county in 1906 and was re-elected in 1908. He was elected Mayor of Elkader the spring of 1902 and served continuously for twelve years. In 1912 he was elected county attorney and had just been re-nominated at the recent primaries.

Mr. Schulte's parents were members of the Lutheran church and as a boy he was confirmed in that faith. He was deeply religious with a broad guage, charitable, faith that was borne out in his life; and at various times was an active Sunday School worker. He was a friend to every one, with a big, kind heart, ready to put himself out to accommodate a friend, aid the needy or serve the community.

He was successful in his profession and its rewards came to him not because he sought them but in recompense for honest service faithfully rendered. Always loyal to a trust the people recognized that loyalty and was pleased to impose trusts and confer honors upon him.

His wide circle of friends will join in sorrow at his untimely death and in sympathy for the bereaved relatives.

He is survived by his wife, four brothers, J. P., at Manly; H. H. and W. F., living near Manly, and J. A., of Lindsay, Cal.; three sisters, Mrs. Fred Bierbaum, of Clayton township; Mrs. Lester Denman, of Hudson, Wyo., and Miss Louise, who has been teaching at Heber City, Utah.

The funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon, with a short service at the house at one o'clock, then he will be taken to the Congregational church and finally laid in the East Side cemetery. The services will be in charge of the Masonic order, of which he has been a member for many years. Rev. Franke will preach the sermon and be assisted by Rev. Lebert.
