Melvin Scott, 89, of Elkader, died Friday, August 7, 2009, at the Elkader Care Center following a long illness.

A memorial service was held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader with Pastor Andrea Mericle officiating.

Honorary bearers were Melvin's grandsons, Gary Noggle, Randy Noggle, Greg Scott, Doug Scott, Doug Scott, Adam Scott, and Aaron Scott.

Inurnment was held 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at Cass Township Cemetery in Strawberry Point.

Visitation was held 5-8 p.m. Monday, August 10, 2009, at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader.

He was born May 27, 1920, to Miles and Velma (Stahl) Scott on his grandparent's farm near Osborne, rural Elkader. Melvin graduated from Elkader High School.

On June 22, 1940, he was united in marriage to Marion Nelson. Three children were born to this union. Melvin worked on many farms for several area farmers until 1954, when he bought his own farm. Marion died in 1984. He continued farming until 2005; when he and Evelyn, his companion for twenty five years, moved to Elkader in 2007.

Melvin loved to play cards, dance and go fishing. His family was very important to him and he loved spending time with them. He served many years on the Allamakee-Clayton REC Board of Directors, Board of the Federal Land Bank and as a Cox Creek Trustee.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary (Jake) Noggle, Springville, Roger Scott, Marion, Dale (Sherry) Scott, Elkader; daughter-in-law, Laura Scott, Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; his companion, Evelyn Nading and many friends.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marion and one grandson, Craig Noggle.
