Leo Henry Bockenstedt, 81, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away from an extended illness on Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at his home.
Mass of Resurrection was held 10 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2009 at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Edgewood, with The Rev. Stephen Lundgren as celebrant.
The casket bearers were Leo's grandsons: Adam Mraz, Brian Mraz, Brett Bockenstedt, Mitch Bockenstedt, Travis Bockenstedt, Matt Zittergruen and Mark Zittergruen.
Honorary bearers were Leo's step-grandsons: Kyle Baumgartner, Mitch Baumbartner, and Matt Baumgartner.
Mass lector was Kaytlan Bockenstedt, Leo's granddaughter.
The gift bearers were Leo's grandchildren: Mackenzie Bockenstedt, Blaine Baumgartner, and Nicolas Bockenstedt.
Interment, with military rites, was conducted in St. Mark's Catholic Cemetery, Edgewood.
Visitation was held 3-8 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2009, at the Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood, and between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. Saturday, September 5, at the funeral home.
He was born on February 23, 1928, at his home in Colesburg, the son of Leonard and Catherine (Lansing) Bockenstedt. Leo entered the armed forces where he served for two years.
On November 6, 1951, Leo was united in marriage to Rita Jane Nurre. Together Leo and Rita had seven children. After Rita’s death on May 30, 1991, Leo was married to Lois Baumgartner on July 3, 1992, just completing 17 years of marriage.
Leo enjoyed farming, hunting, traveling, tractor pulls, rope pulling, and flying his ultra-light plane.
Survivors include his five sons, Glen (Sherrie) Bockenstedt of Manchester, Jan (Michelle) Bockenstedt of Garber, Neil Bockenstedt of Nebraska, Curt (Nancy) Bockenstedt of Edgewood, and Daron (Cindy) Bockenstedt of Edgewood; two daughters, Karen (Mike) Zittergruen of Arizona and Faye (Mark) Mraz of Georgia; his second wife, Lois Bockenstedt of Edgewood; seventeen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers; and six sisters.
Leo was preceded in death by his first wife, Rita; one granddaughter, Andrea Bockenstedt; his parents, Leonard and Catherine Bockenstedt; and an infant sister, Teresa.
